Wheat Midge Season Recap
The 2021 forecast in Saskatchewan and Alberta called for wheat midge in abundance. But what the annual prediction couldn’t take into account is what Mother Nature had in store.
WHAT IS MIDGE TOLERANCE?
WHAT IS A REFUGE?
WHAT IS IN THE MIDGE TOLERANT WHEAT STEWARDSHIP AGREEMENT?
The Stewardship Agreement for Midge Tolerant Wheat limits the use of farm-saved seed to one generation past Certified seed. It’s a simple step that keeps the interspersed refuge system at the proper level, preventing build-up of resistant midge. Without the refuge, we risk losing the one and only tolerant gene.
If you’re a retailer of Midge Tolerant Wheat, you’re required to complete the online Retailer Training Program before making any sales. It reviews the important steps that are necessary to protect Midge Tolerant Wheat technology and takes about 20 minutes from start to finish.
